Perhentian Kecil
Monitor Lizard on the beach and a small leave beetle in the jungle
During the last few years Perhentian Islands grew quite popular among travellers. Partly because it is quite a remote island, which is a lot better than most Thai islands in the gulf area, at least among the ones that I have already travelled. Nice white sand on the beaches, fantastic sea life, coral reefs just on the beach, easy accessible and observable through snorkelling. If one is a bit lucky, one can see sharks and turtles. I stayed on Perhentian kecil, the smaller of the two islands, which is covered with rain forest. Thus I was able to take some interesting pictures of insects, sadly, I did not find any beetles, but still the pictures are worth viewing. I also managed to realize an odd dream of mine, which was climbing a coconut palm, and pluck my own coconut. In addition to the fantastic sealift, on the beaches one can observe monitor lizards (Varanus spec.), which kind of grew accustomed to the view of humans. these big lizards are difficult to find in Thailand, because they are hunted for food, but in Malaysia, luckily they are still quite common. There are two main beaches on the island, long beach and coral bay, the first of which is a bit more crowded and noisy, but with better sand, the second has more sea life, but one can easily cut one's feet on pieces of coral. One last addition is that I finally managed to take pictures of a weird fly species which has an amazing dancing ritual. It is moving its front legs, like a dancer. Again, Perhentian offers a good chance to walk through rain forest, without being scared of getting lost and along the path, one can discover many interesting species, maybe not beetles, but still it is worth trying...
Any questions about these islands, do not hesitate to write me a mail.
