I was lucky to get some first hand experiences with Bricoptis variolisa and an undetermined species which looked very similar. Here is what I wrote about the breeding earlier:
Bricoptis variolisa is a small species from Madagascar. Breeding is quite difficult, but worth a trial… Their colour is of a blackish blue, and there is a fascinating structure on their wings (looking like valleys and mountains). The problem in breeding is the pupation stage. Larvae are extremely choosy and will only pupate in dry sand on the surface of the breeding container and still many larvae will die… Luckily females are quite prolific and thus compensate for the die-offs. With a bit of care continuous breeding is not a problem. One more thing, this active species easily gets scared and then hides in the ground…
