At the time I originally wrote the breeding report, there have been only 7 subspecies of Dynastes hercules. Nowadays, I lost track on how many have been added, but will hopefully find the time to read that up. Subspecies in Dynastes hercules can be differentiated by the form of the horns in the males and sometimes in their maximum sizes. The most important species I have painted below. (I am sorry for my bad drawing skills, :-))
This is very helpful! Aside from differences like color or size, I was a bit stumped as to what constituted the differences between different subspecies, and this answers it perfectly! I’m currently rearing some Dynastes Hercules lichyi larvae, and I will definitely add this resource to my notes for future reference!
Hi there,
very sorry for the late reply. I was busy and forgot to answer. In the meantime many many more hercules subspecies have been added, some of which are very hard to determine unless you know the finding data. It’s a bit tricky, plus there are some hybrids in the trade as well.
Good luck with yours, they are a marvelous species and fun to rear!
