Distribution:
Philippines
Breeding hints:
To my knowledge there are two subspecies at the moment: Odontolabis imperialis imperialis from the Borneo side of Malaysia and Odontolabis imperialis komorii from the Philippines. To be frank, I cannot see a difference in these two subspecies, but if I remember right was told that O. i. komorii has the potential to grow slightly bigger.
I am not aware of breeding reports for this species, which is quite surprising, considering the beauty of this truly ‘imperial’ species. I believe it has been bred quite successfully by Japanese hobbyists, but would need a confirmation for this. In any case, if you have information, please share π
Odontolabis normally make for a good beginners choice. Of course there are some difficult to breed species, but the major challenge in breeding Odontolabis normally lays in achieving telodont males rather than just reproducing the species.
