Breeding hints:
Considering the different reports from breeders, I am not sure if Compsocephalus dimitriewi is either an incredibly different or extremely easy to breed species. When I was breeding them I found them a very easy to breed species that was quite prolific.
Here is what I think I did different from other breeders:
- I kept them quite cool, at around 20 degrees, similar to Lucanus ssp.
- I had added moss into the substrat. But I am not sure if that had an effect.
- Larvae were very peaceful to each other and I did not notice any cannibalism.
- Petr Malec suggests that there are different populations, some of which will need a hibernation during the pupal stage. Maybe I was just lucky to have a non-hibernating form.
If you have additional tips, please do let me know.
